Bergsbyn Industrial Area. The energy of the future is being created here.
Skellefteå is a centre of growth for sustainable industry with a low impact on the climate. Bergsbyn is home to a new industrial area, where a large part of the land is owned by Skellefteå municipality and Skellefteå Kraft. Development plans have long been in place to establish energy-intensive industries in this area. The area will be prepared in stages.

About the project
Work in the field includes ground preparation, fibre connectivity, district heating, recirculation of waste heat, connection to the electrical network, and process and cooling water.
Skellefteå municipality is responsible for an extension of Torsgatan to route 372, where Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) shall connect it to a roundabout, a railway extension, water and sewerage, road lighting, and paths for pedestrians and cyclists which are to run parallel to Torsgatan.
Northvolt, Skellefteå municipality and Skellefteå Kraft have created a joint project organisation with regard to how the work will be carried out. Mikael Lindmark of Skellefteå Kraft is the project manager.
The first of the factory’s four parts is scheduled to be complete by 2020, and the construction started in the summer of 2018. The building of the factory will continue at the rate of one stage per year, which means that it will be fully complete in 2023.
The main project encompasses a number of sub-projects.
- Ground work
- Railway, road, and paths for pedestrians and cyclists
- Electricity network
